POLICE have smashed a counterfeit DVD ring after seizing more than £300,000 worth of discs from a Glasgow flat.
The haul - which included copies of blockbusters King Kong, Brokeback Mountain and The Chronicles of Narnia - was due to be sold in pubs, factories and offices across the city.
Investigators today said the raid was the biggest ever on a storage site in Scotland.
Officers swooped on the flat in Paisley Road West after a man was caught selling the DVDs in the street. Copyright officials said the address was used as a major distribution centre for the scam, which involved Chinese nationals.
Counterfeiters, who have been driven out of city markets, have switched to selling illegal discs through pubs and workplaces, according to the police.
John McGowan, Scotland investigator with the Federation Against Copyright Theft, said: “This was a major distribution point for the whole of the west of Scotland.
“These discs were being sold in pubs, factory units, small workplaces and shops across Glasgow. We are talking in the region of 25,000 DVDs.
“This is an extremely significant discovery. The lost revenue to shops in Glasgow alone would have been very damaging to the retail industry.”
The raid follows a police crackdown on counterfeiters operating from the Barras market.
