THE city councillor who caused an outcry after suggesting Lothian and Borders Police was “institutionally racist” has escaped censure from the police board.
Members of the board, which includes councillors, police officials and Lothian and Borders Chief Constable, Paddy Tomkins, voted to take no action against Councillor Shami Khan over his controversial comments.
The decision was made after Cllr Khan told his fellow board members his comments had been intended to refer to society generally and not to Lothian and Borders Police.
The high-profile Asian councillor had risked being thrown off the board and getting reported to the independent Police Complaints Commission, which could have investigated his actions because of his role as a board member.
