SECRET files have revealed the government made plans to protect the Loch Ness monster from poachers.
Officials feared Nessie would have no legal protection from trophy hunters if she surfaced.
They eventually decided the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act made it illegal to snare, shoot or blow up the legendary monster.
Panic set in during 1985 when the Swedish government asked for help creating a law to protect their equivalent – the Storsjo monster.
Their request sparked a flurry of memos from worried civil servants.
In the papers, released under the Freedom of Information Act, one said: “The protection of this putative denizen of the deep deserves serious consideration.”
