The wife of hostage Ken Bigley has insisted that “Tony Blair can save his life”. Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has said that the Government will speak to the hostage-takers – but he insists there will be no negotiations.Two weeks into the 62-year-old’s hostage ordeal in Iraq, his captors released a second video message from the engineer begging Mr Blair to intervene.

Reacting to the footage, his Thai wife, Sombat, said: “Tony Blair could help him hugely. He is waiting for Tony Blair to say something and do something.”

Mr Blair said he would “immediately respond” if the group holding Mr Bigley made contact.

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw reiterated the Government position that there will be no negotiations, but confirmed that talks could be held.

He told Sky News: “We’d have to listen to what they have to say, but I doubt they will make contact. These are not terrorists with a pleasant record. They have made no contact.

“We can’t negotiate with hostage takers, we can’t pay a ransom, we can’t release prisoners. If we did the world would be less safe.”

In the video Mr Bigley, dressed in clothes similar to those worn by inmates at Guantanamo Bay, said he did not believe the kidnappers wanted to murder him.

And in another emotional, direct plea to Mr Blair, he said: “He doesn’t care about me. I’m just one, just one person.

“Please, please, help me. I’m begging you, I’m begging you to speak, to push.”
